Good Bye Rajconteur; Welcome AlooTechie

First of all, I must express my sincere regret for neglecting this blog for more than a month. To say that I had been busy would hardly be sufficient enough explanation for this neglect. But, the fact is, that’s the truth, though not the whole truth. The whole truth would include a few words about AlooTechie.

Aloo what? Didn’t you ask that? Don’t worry! I will explain all that I know and want to know about AlooTechie. Sorry, it’s AlooTechie and not AlooTikki. :-)

AlooTechie is a new age website, which aims to cover Internet news that interests and matters to a layman. Sorry, I am not going to talk more than that about the website, just because I don’t want to be repetitive any more. And, in any way, if you wanted to know more about the website, what’s stopping you from clicking on AlooTechie and exploring the site for yourself?

I don’t know what role Rajconteur has played in the germination of the idea behind AlooTechie, but I would like to believe that it must have played a substantial role in at least convincing Sidharth that I could and would do justice with the subject and the website. After all he could not have encouraged me to assume the role, responsibility and designation of Editor, AlooTechie if he had not been convinced about me, could he? Thank you, Rajconteur, for your help in bridging the distance between me and my purpose.

Even at the risk of sounding unsympathetic, I feel that Rajconteur, as a harbinger, has played its role and should now leave the stage for the protagonist to carry the story forward. So let’s allow the baton to get passed on… and wish all the best to the new kid on the horizon, i.e. AlooTechie.

Google’s new internet evangelist eyes at 5.6 bn potential net users

Google has appointed Dr Vinton G Cerf as its chief internet evangelist. Dr Cerf would be one of a dozen or so vice presidents working closely with Eric E Schmidt, Google's chief executive, as the company continues to move beyond its roots as an internet search engine.

"The internet has a billion users, and we have 5.6 billion to go," Dr Cerf has said. "Each will come to the internet in different ways, like wirelessly, and Google needs to be receptive and adaptive to those different circumstances."

Dr Cerf, 62, is best known for the early work he did on the internet, and its precursor, the Arpanet. Together with Robert Kahn, a fellow computer scientist, Dr Cerf in 1973 sketched out a set method, or protocol, for allowing different, isolated computer networks to talk to one another. The protocol, which paved the way for today's internet, is called Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP.

Skype may be picked up by eBay for $3 billion?

Skype, a provider of VoIP software and services, is reportedly in talks with eBay regarding a potential buyout.

The acquisition, if fructified, would give eBay a pay-per-call advertising model, believed to be a lucrative avenue in local yellow pages online advertising.

Skype has 52 million registered users, and about 27 million actively use their service.

Technology gadgets rich with features but poor in usability

According to a new report, commissioned by the European technology PR company Hotwire, young males are embracing new technologies much faster than women and the over-45s.

“The reason for this, we believe, is that manufacturers are focusing too heavily on the features within their products rather than the benefits and the ways they can change people's lives,” says Brendon Craigie, Hotwire's senior partner.

No takers for Hindi internet explorer

An Indian IT engineer claims to have developed the world's first Hindi internet explorer which enables a user to convert any English word on a web page into its Devanagari meaning at the click of the mouse.

However, Jagdeep Dangi is an unhappy man as he is yet to find a buyer for his software. Dangi is physically challenged and comes from a small town called Ganj Basoda in Madhya Pradesh.

MSN Messenger to enable voice chat from computer to phone

Microsoft has purchased a small internet calling start-up called Teleo, as part of a move to expand the capabilities of MSN Messenger.

A key part of Teleo's technology is focused on making calls from a computer to an ordinary telephone, a feature that may find its way into MSN Messenger before the end of 2005.

The acquisition underlines the growing importance of voice services, increasingly indistinguishable from an ordinary telephone, to the instant-message platforms that have been one of the internet's most popular applications.
